“It had been out in the elements too long, and the body was too badly decomposed to make a positive visual identification,” West Virginia State Trooper Jeff Matheny said.
Matheny and other emergency crews pulled the body from the water Saturday morning, after two people who were out fishing found it in the river.
The body was so badly decomposed, Matheny said, crews were unable to tell the age or weight of the victim – only that it was an adult male.
The medical examiner is performing an autopsy to determine how the man died and to identify the body based on dental records. Troopers said they do not think foul play was involved.
Investigators are working to find out if the body is connected with any missing person reports in or around Mingo County .
