State BOE could return local control to Mingo County Wednesday

The state Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting Wednesday at Mingo Central High School and the board could take the opportunity to return the Mingo County school system to local control.

The state seized control of the system in 2005 citing a number of problems including facilities.

Since then several high schools have been closed and Mingo Central was constructed.

The state Department of Education’s Office of Performance Audits gave the Mingo County system some passing grades in an evaluation last year and did another review last month. The state BOE could consider a recommendation Wednesday.

The board’s regular meeting begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Beginning at 9 a.m. board members will tour Mingo Central’s Career Technical Education wing.

EKB News  will have a reporter at the meeting and will bring updates as they occur.
