LEAD Community Action group members say they've cleaned up some signs, but they say the damage is too great to really make a dent in the problem.
Residents worry that first responders won't be able to read the ruined signs, causing a major safety issue.
Other signs are sprayed with bullet holes, including some dedicated to military veterans and some in residential neighborhoods.
The Department of Highways said that funding issues make it hard to replace all damaged road signs, but they say they're looking into the problem.
They say signs that have become illegible are given top priority.
