Prosecutors to Drop One Case Against Judge in Exchange for Plea

Federal prosecutors say suspended Mingo County Circuit Judge Michael Thornsbury has agreed to plead guilty in the second conspiracy case brought against him last week, and they'll drop charges in the first case when he does.

A motion filed in U.S. District Court in Charleston on Tuesday asks Judge Thomas Johnston to indefinitely postpone the current filing deadlines in one case against Thornsbury.

Prosecutors say Thornsbury tried repeatedly to frame a romantic rival for false crimes.

Last week, prosecutors charged Thornsbury in a second schemed designed to protect the reputation of a former sheriff who prosecutors say had bought drugs from a local sign maker.

Sheriff Eugene Crum died in an unrelated shooting in April.

Thornsbury's attorney has declined comment on either set of charges.
