New census estimates show that West Virginia was one of two states to lose
population in the past year.
The estimates released Monday by the
Census Bureau puts the state's population as of July 1, 2013, at 1,854,304.
That's down nearly 2,400 from the 2012 estimate.
According to reports, Maine
was the only other state to record a decrease in population.
The 2012 county-level estimates showed
only 16 of West Virginia 's
55 counties having gained population since the 2010 census.
