Courthouse Records Vandalized; Security System Installed

LINCOLN COUNTY, W.Va. -- Officials say they're taking steps to stop vandalism of property records in the Lincoln County courthouse.

They say several deed books were intentionally damaged within the last few months.

Officials say it appears that someone took a razor blade and cut out selected pages of the records.

"I don't know if their intentions were to get rid of the record or to [avoid] paying for a copy," county clerk Direl Baker said. "It could have been either one."

Baker says the vandalism prompted him to buy and install a new security system with cameras in the records room.

The cameras record 24 hours a day and use infrared light to operate in the dark.

Baker says the system cost a little less than a thousand dollars to purchase, but could potentially save thousands more in documents.

"They're a part of history and I think it looks good to have the old records," he said.

All of the courthouse documents are backed up on microfilm, so no information was lost through the vandalism.
