West Virginia seeing less people on unemployment

West Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is the lowest it’s been in four years.

According to WorkForce West Virginia, the state’s unemployment rate fell to 6.6 percent in April, a decline of four-tenths of a percentage point.

The number of unemployed residents in the state fell 2,600 to 53,500.

Total nonfarm payroll employment declined 100, according to Tuesday’s report. A 1,400 jump in the goods-producing sector was almost offset by a loss of 1,500 in the service-providing sector.

Within the goods-producing sector, construction added the most jobs at 1,000 with mining and logging next in line with 600 jobs. Manufacturing saw a decline of 200.

In the service-providing sector, both trade, transportation, and utilities and other services added 200 jobs.

The report had the educational and health services with the largest employment declines at 800.

Both information and financial activities saw no change in unemployment.

The national unemployment rate declined one-tenth of a
percentage point to 7.5 percent.
