Former Freedom Industries president faces federal charges

The former president and CEO of Freedom Industries is facing federal charges after a criminal complaint was filed in court on Monday.
The allegations against Gary Southern include bankruptcy fraud, making a false oath in a bankruptcy case and wire fraud.
He claims to have started working as president three days before the January 9 chemical leak at the company’s facility along the Elk River in Charleston that left around 300,000 without water.
The complaint, which was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia in Charleston, alleges Southern made “numerous false and/or fraudulent statements” about details including his involvement with the company before being made president and his knowledge about the conditions of the facility.
It is also alleged Southern made these false statements to protect his assets, estimated at over $7 million in October.

He maintains the chemical spill is no fault of his and he should not be held responsible.
