New state health officer chosen

The executive director of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department will be West Virginia’s new state health officer.
Dr. Rahul Gupta will become Commissioner of the state Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Public Health on Jan. 1.
Gupta will replace Dr. Letitia Tierney who is resigning effective Dec. 31 after just more than a year in the role.
Both Gupta and Tierney were key figures in the response to the Jan. 9 Freedom Industries chemical spill that contaminated tap water for 300,000 West Virginians.
Gupta has served as executive director of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department since 2009.

During part of that time, he has also concurrently served as director of the Putnam County Health Department.
