Police on Patrol on Route 10 Closure

LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. -- Logan County Sheriff’s deputies and police officers are on patrol on either side of the 1-mile-long Route 10 road closure in Logan County to ensure that everything runs smoothly in case of an emergency.

The detour route through Rum Creek and Kelly Mountain has been resurfaced to pave and fix damage, and guardrails have been installed by work crews. Officials with West Virginia Paving said the stretch of the detour that they have repaired is about 6 miles long.

Logan County Sheriff Sonya Porter said while making the detour safer was a priority for the Department of Highways, they also wanted to create a plan for emergencies after a meeting with neighbors in Man.

“The road closure now has an officer on each end of the roadway, and it’s only going to be open for medical emergencies,” Porter said. “That’s only if a helicopter is not available.”

In addition to her deputies, Porter said officers from Chapmanville, Logan, Man and West Logan are helping out with the patrols 24 hours a day. She said they will continue to do this until the road is back open, which is expected to be about three months from now.
