W.Va. regulators remind residents to call 811 before digging to have utility lines marked

he Public Service Commission of West Virginia is reminding residents to call 811 before they dig to have underground utility lines marked.
The reminder is part of National 811 Day on Sunday. The call alerts all the appropriate utility companies and locators from each company will mark the site within 48 hours.

Officials say installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree and laying a patio are all examples of projects that require a call to 811 before starting.

Because the depths of utility lines can vary, the risk of striking an underground utility exists, even when digging only a few inches.

And striking a pipeline, wire or cable can cause injury or death and may result in costly repairs, fines or inconvenient outages.
