Backpacks may soon be lighter for many Wayne County
high school students.
The Board of Education is buying
tablets for every 9th and 10th grade student in the county.
The tablets will be primarily used for
Math I and Math II courses, with the curriculum and all worksheets downloaded
onto the device. Students will then be able to complete work or review text
from anywhere, without the need for Internet access.
Superintendent Lynn Hurt says having
the tablets will cut down on the need to print about two million pages of
curriculum and worksheets, but more importantly, provide education using a
medium students are comfortable with.
The tablets come with a detachable
keyboard and include a tracking unit and pre-loaded Internet filter to meet
State Policy for student computing.
Orientations for students and parents are
scheduled at each high school in late July.
Students and parents will be required
to sign several forms before they can take the tablets home.
The tablets will be returned at the end
of each school year to be serviced and then returned to the students at the
beginning of the next year. Each summer, new tablets will be purchased for
incoming freshmen.
