Mingo County Schools Superintendent Randy Keathley says the
investigation into alleged sexual assaults at Burch Middle School
could take some time, and he wants investigators to take as much as they need.
He said that's so they can figure out exactly what happened.
He also said these allegations are a serious matter, and they're
doing what they can to calm nerves and keep students safe.
Allegations of a cover-up of sexual assaults at Burch Middle School
have sent shockwaves through Mingo
County .
The claims came to light last month in an injunction filed by
the Attorney General's office.
According to the documents, two female students claim they were
repeatedly sexually assaulted by two boys while in the seventh grade.
The injunction said this happened while the girls were on the
bus, in class and even on a field trip.
But, when they went to report it, the document states school
officials retaliated and even said the girls could face disciplinary action.
Since that time, several administrators have been re-assigned
and aren't at the middle school.
For now, school leaders said the investigation is in full swing
as they try to figure out what happened.
The superintendent also said administrators and staff are
working closely with students and guidance counselors to help with any concerns
they may have moving forward.
