A former worker at the Fayette
County Sheriff’s Department was sentenced Tuesday to spend one year and one day
in federal prison for stealing $40,000 in cash from the funds paid for conceal
carry permits.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said
Cheryl Gray, 44, of Hilltop, was in charge of collecting the application fees
for the permits from the sheriff. During a six-month period she stole the money
and created incomplete lists of applicants that she submitted to the State
Police.
Gray pleaded guilty to mail fraud back in June.
