Dueling W.Va. magistrate pay hike proposals end legislative session without resolution

West Virginia magistrates will have to wait for pay raises from the Legislature.
Lawmakers ended the 2013 session on Saturday unable to agree on salary hikes.

The House proposed getting rid of the salary tiers that link magistrate court pay to county populations. Delegates voted to raise salaries for 38 magistrates as well as their assistants and clerks and deputy clerks statewide.

The Senate wanted to keep but tweak those salary categories. That approach would benefit 14 magistrates as well as top court staffers.

Both versions respond to the 2010 Census. Declining populations moved Lewis, McDowell, Wetzel and Wyoming counties into the lower-paid category.

The Senate has proposed studying magistrate pay during monthly interim meetings.
