A community remembers its sheriff

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — A community came out Thursday night to honor its fallen hero.

Family, friends and community members withstood pouring rain to pay respects to Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum during a candlelight vigil outside the county courthouse, not far from where the lawmen was shot and killed the previous day.

Crum was gunned down Wednesday while eating lunch in his cruiser in a courthouse parking lot. His alleged shooter, Tennis Maynard, is facing murder and attempted murder charges.

Hundreds of people gathered to shed tears, sing songs and pray. But it wasn’t all about grief and mourning — it also was about remembering who Crum was.

Before the vigil, Crum’s widow Rosie was sworn in as interim sheriff. The announcement drew applause from the crowd.

The decision to appoint Rosie Crum as interim sheriff was made at a special committee meeting Thursday afternoon in Williamson.

Crum’s visitation is scheduled for Saturday from 4-9 p.m. at Mingo Central High School. The campus also will host the sheriff’s funeral Sunday at 1 p.m.
