Working West Virginia coal miner to be honored at annual gala celebrating occupation

A West Virginia coal miner will be honored with a new award at an annual gala celebrating the occupation.

"Rocket Boys" author Homer Hickam will present the "Homer Hickam Collier Award" to a working coal miner who epitomizes the spirit, dedication and skills of the mining profession.

The new award is one of several to be given out at the 2013 Miner's Celebration. The gala reception and dinner will recognize those who play a role in the success of the state's mining enterprise.

The Oct. 3 gala is a project of the Center for Environmental, Geotechnical and Applied Sciences at Marshall University and other government agencies and occupational groups.

The free reception at the Tamarack atrium is free. Tickets for the dinner and the awards ceremony cost $5 per person.
