Gayle Manchin will lead the West Virginia Board of Education as it begins a search for a new schools superintendent.
Board members elected Manchin to a two-year term as president on Wednesday.
She replaces Wade Linger, who remains on the board.
Michael Green was elected as vice president.
Manchin was appointed to the board in 2007.
Attorney General Patrick Morrisey agreed to help the board during its search for a superintendent. He told the board on Wednesday that his office would provide help with legal questions such as ethics issues and open meetings laws.
The board hired James Phares as superintendent in December 2012 to replace Jorea Marple, who was fired a month earlier. The board said at the time that it planned a nationwide search for a long-term superintendent.
