A case that several West Virginia homeowners brought against Alpha Natural Resources over property damage they blame on an underground coal mine is wrapping up.
Closing arguments were scheduled for Thursday in Kingwood in the
2010 lawsuit against Virginia-based Alpha and its Kingwood Mining Co.
subsidiary.
Homeowners say the Whitetail Kittanning Mine near Fellowsville had a history of roof falls before it closed in 2009. They blame the mine for subsidence damage, contaminated groundwater and explosive methane gas that leaked into homes and outbuildings.
The trial has been going on in Preston County Circuit Court.
Alpha closed the mine after it was fined more than $763,000 for repeated safety violations but has denied responsibility for the property damage.
The plaintiffs say the company was negligent and ruined their property values.
