Rockel retired as chief on June 30.
He will now be the Chief Field Deputy of Operations for the Mingo County Sheriff's Office.
Rockel has been working with the Sheriff's Office for several months, helping battle the drug epidemic.
When Sheriff Eugene Crum was murdered in April, Rockel was appointed Interim Chief of Operations.
Rockel said that with his position, he will be over daily operations.
He says he believes this is what former Sheriff Eugene Crum, as well as new Sheriff Rosie Crum, would have wanted.
Williamson Mayor Darrin McCormick says that during an organizational meeting, council appointed Barry Blair to the Williamson Police Chief position.
McCormick says Blair has nearly two decades of law enforcement experience.
Blair begins his role as Chief on July 15.
