Community saddened by death of beloved sheriff

Residents in Mingo County are in shock after losing their beloved sheriff in a shooting yesterday.

Police say Crum was eating lunch in his cruiser around noon Wednesday in the parking lot of the Mingo County Courthouse in Williamson when an individual walked up to the sheriff’s vehicle and shot Crum at point blank range.

A large crowd gathered outside the courthouse yesterday afternoon for a press conference regarding the incident.

Mingo County Commission President John Hubbard talked about the difference Crum made in the county and how the coming days are going to be tough.

“To say Eugene will be missed is a vast understatement and the healing process for his family and our county will be long and difficult,” said Hubbard.

Hubbard urged everyone to keep Crum’s family and the community in their prayers.

The alleged shooter, Tennis Melvin Maynard, 37, of Ragland, was shot and captured moments later following the shooting by a Mingo County deputy in Delbarton.

Family, friends and those from the community will be meeting once again in front of the Mingo County Courthouse tonight at 8 p.m. to hold a candlelight vigil in Crum’s honor.
