UPDATE : Shooter's Name Released in Mingo County Sheriff's Killing

(Williamson, WV) - Residents across Southern West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky have spent much of the afternoon in shock after hearing the news that Mingo County West Virginia Sheriff Eugene Crum was shot and killed.  According to WV State Police and area emergency officials, the shooting happened just after noon, while Crum was on his lunch break.   Officials say Sheriff Crum was sitting in his SUV in a parking lot on the corner of 3rd and Harvey Streets when a male subject who has now been identified as 37 year old Tennis Melvin Maynard approached the Sheriff’s vehicle and fired a weapon into the vehicle, killing Crum.  West Virginia State Police reported that a witness saw Maynard fleeing the scene of the shooting in a pickup truck, and got the license number.  A Mingo County deputy attempted to stop Maynard at the intersection of Route 65 and Rockhouse Road, but he fled…leading the deputy on a chase through parts of Delbarton before both vehicles crashed at the Dr. JR Bob Farley Memorial Bridge.  After that, both Maynard and the deputy got out of their vehicles…and the deputy shot Maynard.  There is no word yet as to whether or not Maynard was armed at the time he was shot. We do know, however, that Tennis Melvin Maynard was transported to Logan Regional Medical Center, and then to Cabell Huntington Hospital for his wounds.   No word yet on his condition.  Stay tuned to the stations of East Kentucky Broadcasting at 6pm as we will broadcast the press conference LIVE from outside the Mingo County Courthouse.
