Ways to Avoid Becoming a Victim of Tax Scammers

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. -- In two short weeks, all your tax documents need to be postmarked and sent off to the IRS.

So, the IRS warns taxpayers to be aware of claims that sound too good to be true so that you don’t fall victim to scammers who are after your refund check.

Be on the lookout for people wanting to cash in on your hard work by offering to file your tax return for you, then making off with your check.

Make sure you hire a professional who has a preparer tax identification number to file your taxes.

Make sure that you fill out everything accurately and in the space it's supposed to be in -- that's one of the first things the IRS looks for is to make sure that you're putting everything on the line that it belongs in, and if not then that usually sends a red flag up.
