Mason County Sheriff Resigns
{Charleston, West Virginia}...Mason County Sheriff David Anthony, 42, of Point Pleasant, resigned Monday amid allegations that he fired a weapon over the head of his 13-year-son and mishandled county funds. Anthony did not give a reason for his resignation but said he would drop out of the 2012 race for sheriff. In February, county commissioners filed a petition asking for Anthony's ouster with the state Supreme Court. A grand jury indictment was handed down in January for a wanton-endangerment charge, as well as child neglect with risk of injury, domestic assault and shooting near a dwelling. Anthony was also charged with 19 counts of embezzlement, 18 counts of unauthorized use of a government purchasing card and fraudulent schemes. Police say Anthony spent more than $2,400 of Mason taxpayers' money for his own personal use through the county's credit cards and checks.
