The City of Williamson released lists of the largest delinquent accounts of various city taxes and fees on Sunday.
Mayor Steven Knopp says that the city continues to suffer a serious financial shortfall due in part to non-payment of taxes and fees by certain persons and businesses. The members of the city council echoed his sentiments at a recent city meeting.
The City of Charleston also discloses delinquencies and publishes similar lists in major state newspapers. For some time prior to this action, the city has been actively prosecuting delinquent garbage and refuse fees in Williamson Municipal Court, resulting in criminal fines and court costs to convict violators of city ordinances.
Mayor Knopp says to avoid having your name appear in the lists, your account should be up-to-date.
The lists will continue to be made public as a matter of policy.
