CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - As Republicans control the West
Virginia Legislature for the first time in decades, Democratic Gov. Earl Ray
Tomblin can veto anything they pass. Ultimately, it might not matter.
West
Virginia is one of six states only requiring a simple majority - more
"yes" than "no" votes - to override vetoes.
In West Virginia, overriding budget vetoes
requires a two-thirds vote, though.
Arkansas has a similar setup. Since 2012, the
Arkansas GOP overrode Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe's vetoes on abortion
restrictions, a voter ID law and a natural gas drilling tax credit.
West Virginia Republicans haven't
released their agenda. They will likely pass a version of an abortion ban
Tomblin vetoed last session.
Tomblin's office says he respects the
simple majority requirement.
