U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller
(D-W.Va.) reflected on 30 years representing the Mountain State
in Washington D.C during a traditional address for retiring members of Congress
on Thursday, December 04, 2014.
His service to West
Virginia really began half a century ago when he volunteered with VISTA in Emmons in southern WV. Rockefeller was 27
years old when he took that assignment in 1964.
In his speech, Rockefeller
addressed his undertakings from economic endeavors to health concerns of
constituents. His speech was filled with encouragement of his colleagues
who remain and those who will begin Senate commitments in January to move
forward in bipartisanship.
Rockefeller’s political career
began in the state House of Delegates in 1966. He served as West Virginia ’s Secretary of state, the president at West Virginia Wesleyan
University and West Virginia ’s governor before being
elected to serve on Capitol Hill.
Near the end of his farewell speech, Rockefeller addressed home.
“Thank you for placing your faith in me, I know it was hard at first, and
giving me the greatest reward, the chance to fight for meaningful and lasting
opportunity, for those who are too often forgotten but absolutely deserve the best.
