Mayor Steve Williams says that Carl Eastham takes over Monday as interim chief.
As a member of the department, Eastham was also Union President of the local Firefighter's Association for 17 years.
Current Chief Randy Ellis will return to his role as Captain.
Ellis was firefighter of the year in 2010.
City council will vote on Eastham's appointment on Feb. 25.
