Feb. 1 Deadline for Home Heating Assistance

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. --- Signing up for home heating assistance kicks off Tuesday in West Virginia.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources will accept applications from the general public for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) beginning Tuesday, Jan. 22, and ending Friday, Feb. 1.

Eligibility for LIEAP benefits is based on income, household size and whether or not the household is responsible for paying its heating bill. Income must be at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty guideline for the household size.

"The deadline is February 1st. That's it," says Alissa Stewart with Southwestern Community Action. "Don't worry about having all the information now. Just apply. You've got to get most of the application filled out and you can always take that proof of income and the heating bill down to DHHR at a later date."

All applications, whether mailed or hand-delivered, must be received by DHHR or postmarked by Feb. 1. Applications received after this date will be denied. The program is limited to the amount of federal funding allocated to West Virginia under the LIHEAP Block Grant.
