{Charleston, West Virginia}...Monday, Mark Lucas Thompson of Alum Creek pleaded not guilty by reason of mental illness to animal cruelty and petit larceny charges after being accused of stealing, sexually assaulting and killing his neighbor's pygmy goat in May 2011. Thompson was found in his bedroom half naked and wearing women's underwear while standing over the goat at a house near Quebec Road in South Charleston. Authorities say he was high on bath salts at the time. Thompson has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial and will spend six and one half years at Sharpe Mental Hospital, with credit for time served. Kanawha County Circuit Judge James C. Stucky ordered that, after Thompson spends five years in treatment, "he's not just released back into society if he's still mentally unstable and presents a danger to himself or others."
