A coal miner is dead and another miner injured following an accident at an eastern Kanawha County
The state Mine Safety Office says the accident was reported at just after 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Blue Creek coal preparation plant on Campbells Creek near Malden
A state mine safety office spokesperson tells MetroNews a worker was killed after a hydraulic cylinder exploded. Another worker suffered what’s being described as minor injuries and was transported to a Charleston
The prep plant is owned by Midland Trail Energy, a subsidiary of Patriot Coal.
State and federal mine investigators responded to the scene and an investigation is underway.
The death is the first mining death in West Virginia
