Coal miner killed in Kanawha County

A coal miner is dead and another miner injured following an accident at an eastern Kanawha County mining operation.
The state Mine Safety Office says the accident was reported at just after 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Blue Creek coal preparation plant on Campbells Creek near Malden.
A state mine safety office spokesperson tells MetroNews a worker was killed after a hydraulic cylinder exploded. Another worker suffered what’s being described as minor injuries and was transported to a Charleston hospital.
The prep plant is owned by Midland Trail Energy, a subsidiary of Patriot Coal.
State and federal mine investigators responded to the scene and an investigation is underway.
The death is the first mining death in West Virginia in 2013.
