{Charleston, West Virginia}...State Deputy Revenue Secretary Mark Muchow says state tax collections for August were approximately $14 million below estimates, and collections for the state severance tax were $10 million below estimates. Coal production in West Virginia is down as much as eight percent when compared to this time last year. Muchow says less coal is being mined for a variety of reasons and the price of coal has dropped. Most other taxes exceeded estimates for the month. The personal income tax collections missed estimates by $13.9 million. Muchow says that could be contributed to fewer people working during and after the June 29th derecho that left statewide power outages.
