Tomblin Wins Over Maloney
{West Virginia}...After spending nearly a year as acting governor of West Virginia, Democrat Earl Ray Tomblin has been elected as the state's chief executive. Tomblin has served as acting governor since Joe Manchin stepped down in November after he won a U.S. Senate seat. Tomblin defeated Republican Bill Maloney and will serve the remaining year of Manchin's term. Throughout the campaign, Tomblin touted his job as acting governor, citing a budget surplus of more than $300 million, elimination of the food tax and his veto of a raise in fees at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Larry Puccio, chairman of the Democratic Party of West Virginia, released a statement saying, “Twice in eleven months, the people of West Virginia have said ‘no’ to big money from out-of-state trying to buy an election. They have made it clear that our great state of West Virginia is not for sale."
