Swimmer Disappears In Kanawha River

{Gauley Bridge, West Virginia}...Teams from the Gauley Bridge, Smithers and Montgomery police departments, as well as crews from the National Parks Service and Division of Natural Resources spent Sunday on the Kanawha River searching for a Fayette County man believed to have drowned. A woman approached Fayette County Deputy W.K. Willis while he was on patrol Saturday night in the Boonesboro Road area and told him her friend, 47 year old David Jones of Powellton, had been swimming at Kanawha Falls with her and a group of several others, including children, when he tried to swim across the river. A man in the group told deputies he and Jones tried to swim across the river, and, about three-fourths of the way across, he looked back and saw Jones floating and resting, but he couldn't find Jones after he got to the other side. He said he swam back across the river and joined his friends who helped him search for Jones, but they could not find him.
