Second District Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito has presented medals to Dorothy Gunno of St. Albans who knew her father, John Harvey Turner, as a decorated World War I hero. Gunno said she was 16 when her father passed away, and he had talked a lot about different things about receiving medals, but she had never seen them. She's wasn't sure if his WWI Victory Button and the WWI Victory Medal with Meuse-Argonne and St. Mihiel Battle Clasps were misplaced or if her father had lost them, but she wanted to see them for herself. She called up Capito after learning the medals could be replaced, and she says Capito fulfilled her wish and went far beyond. Turner was sprayed with mustard gas during one of the battles he fought in. He returned home to Mason County after the war and joined the Civilian Conservation Corp or CCC. He died in 1962.
