Alpha Layoffs And Cutbacks
Wednesday, Alpha Natural Resources closed two mines and a coal preparation plant in Logan County, cut production at a site in Fayette County and eliminated jobs at a surface mine and trucking company in Boone County. About 95 people worked at the Superior Surface Mine, Hatfield Mine and the Stirrat Preparation Plant in Logan County. Thirty people lost their jobs immediately, while 65 others were offered other jobs with Alpha. In Fayette County, eleven workers were laid off at the Republic Surface Mine. In Boone County, production cutbacks at the Black Castle Mine and Trace Transport forced 59 people out of a job, while about 12 others were transferred.
