Oak Hill Police Officer Shot

{Oak Hill, West Virginia}...An Oak Hill police officer in Fayette County was shot early Wednesday morning. Thirty-two year old Sergeant J.L. Kirk had responded to a report of an alarm sounding at the Maple Court Apartments near the top of Whipple Hill around 1:00 A.M. when he noticed a man walking down the road toward Whipple. Kirk drove his marked police cruiser toward the man. He got out of his cruiser, and the man turned around and shot Kirk in the lower abdomen, the bullet being stopped by Kirk's bullet proof vest. The man fled when Sergeant Kirk returned fire. Kirk, a 12-year veteran of the Oak Hill Police Department, was taken to Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill. He was examined and released, and joined other officers in trying to find the shooter.
