Trial Begins In South Charleston Toddler's Death

  • {West Virginia}...Opening statements got underway Wednesday in the trial of Larry Hayes of South Charleston, a man accused of causing injuries that led to the October 2010 death of 18 month old Rebecca McDaniel. Police say Hayes had been watching McDaniel on September 30th while her mother, Meredith Bush, was at work. Hayes says he had fallen from a set of stairs and landed on top of the child and that it was an accident, but an autopsy revealed Rebecca’s death was caused by multiple blunt force impacts to the head. Testifying in court Wednesday, Bush told a jury Hayes called her as he was pulling into the IHOP restaurant parking lot, where she worked, telling her something was wrong with the child. McDaniel died a few days later at a local hospital after being disconnected from a ventilator.
