Powerball Winner Helps WV State Police
(West Virginia) The West Virginia State Police has a new state-of-the-art mobile forensic unit, thanks to Powerball winner Randy Smith. The State Police's Jefferson County detachment received the $150,000 unit last month. Smith officially presented the vehicle to the detachment Thursday. Smith is a former Berkeley County sheriff and deputy. He says the sheriff's department always needed equipment that it couldn't have because there was no money available. The vehicle will be used in the Eastern Panhandle. It also will be available to other parts of the state when needed. Smith won a $79 million Powerball jackpot last year. He chose the $44 million cash option and pocketed $30 million after taxes.
